Grupo Fantasma is an 11 piece Latin funk band based in Austin, Texas.
Since 1999, Fantasma's DIY (do it yourself) attitude and horn and percussion driven Latin sound has rocked legendary world music venues, punk, rock clubs, and everywhere in between.
A heavy touring schedule has made them one of the best live acts in the country. "One of the all time great Texas bands" says Pop Culture Press. "The adventurous musical offspring of Los Lobos and Mano Negra" raves Memphis Commercial Appeal. Their new album Movimiento Popular was called "one of the finest releases in any genre this past year" by the Houston Press. The spectrum of sounds on Movimiento Popular highlight Spanish language vocals and four piece horns anchored by a dynamic percussion and rhythm section.
From the jarring new-school cumbia opener "Peligrosa" to the Fania-esque salsa of "Vida Guerra" to the heavy rock of "Vacilon," Grupo Fantasma represents a new generation of musicians who can reference Quincy Jones era production and the grittiness of the Beastie Boys "Check Your Head."
The band and it's sound transcends genres and current musical trends. Stuart Sullivan (Willie Nelson, Sublime, Butthole Surfers) was recruited to engineer, and Carl Thiel (Robert Rodriguez, Kill Bill II) was brought in to handle the mixing process.
Special guest artists featured on the album include Ragah El, who introduces the band in classic dance hall style, Tejano music legend Ruban Ramos (Los Super Seven), and DMC champion DJ Baby G.
